LEAN Living

In celebration of the centenary of women’s right to vote and to honour the women in our borough, we have visited our women’s only LEAN Living group, to find out how the programme is helping to improve their health and wellbeing.

Launched in January, the Green Lane Mosque group is the borough’s very first women’s only LEAN Living programme.

The course takes place for two hours each week and lasts for 13 weeks. Delivered by one of our female Healthy Lifestyles Coaches, the first hour of the session is spent educating the women on a number of nutrition topics and the second hour is spent exercising.

Nilufar Chowdhury, one of fifteen course participants, said, “coming to the women’s group is really good, you can mix with other ladies and learn new things… This programme has motivated me a lot.”

The women are just seven weeks through the course but are already seeing great results!

Naz Ghazala, another course attendee, said, “I like this programme because we feel comfortable and safe here [in the mosque] – it is better for us than going to a [gender] combined gym… We all enjoy doing the exercises together.”

While all LEAN Living programmes are led by our qualified Healthy Lifestyle coaches, they are also supported by at least one of our Community Health Champions volunteers.

The Green Lane Mosque group is supported by the lovely Addiba who assists with registering attendees, weight measurements and also helps to explain anything the women might not understand.

Addiba has said, “it’s an interesting group, in the beginning they found it hard to do the exercises but now they are more energised… the programme is beneficial for the women because for some of them it is their first time out of their home leaving their family and children, they are enjoying it because it is their time… I am also enjoying it because I have grown in confidence – my own communication has improved.”

We hope to launch another women’s only group in April at the Green Lane Mosque, which will be open to all women in Barking and Dagenham. As S. Masood another programme attendee said,
“If for example, other women in our community want to come then they should. If there is a women’s only programme at a church, we should be going there, and if there is another programme at the Mosque they should be coming here… that way we can interact with each other and it is better.”

In order to join the LEAN Living programme you must have a BMI of 30 or above, be 18 or over and be a Barking and Dagenham resident. If you have a health condition, you will have to be referred by your GP.
